  Where might I find the maps referenced on your site? I plan to come to Scotland this summer and would like to see some of these sites.

  I enjoyed your articles very much. I am doing some personal genealogical research and your text supplies context for the lives of my Scottish ancestors.

  Which maps in particular?

  Many map references are to the Ordnance Survey maps for a particular area (and are noted). These can be picked up in Scotland or from http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/jsp/mapshop/mapShop.jsp?display=/products_new/landranger/index.cfm?shop_ID=1

  Comments on the Stuart Kings. Were they, as many people think, just a bunch of ‘losers’ ie: ‘Bad Monarchs’. James 1 (V1), Charles 1 (an egomaniac?), Charles 11 (a lover of things of the flesh?), The Old and Young ‘Pretender’ (Bonnie Prince Charlies) and the Jacobite Uprising & Culloden and all that! Are there Scottish Historians who view all this differently from the view point of English Historians, Does ‘Jacobitism’ have echoes into today Scotland, and is any of it ‘relevant’ in todays Scotland with its own ‘Assembly’?.

  I am interested in Scottish History, but do not have a great ‘in depth’ knowledge. I am also of Scottish descent, however regard myself as Scottish but live in England.

  I am interested in the history of Scotland and I am trying to do my father’s side of the family tree and i know that his family came Scotland and his family name is Little’s and Miller’s.

  trying from england to work things out about a suicide by hanging at 51 glentrool village, dumfries and galloway 09.06.06. the flow of scots/anglo info is difficult. help if you can.please. any info much appreciated in the spirit of reconciliation for peace of mind. any info wotso please, hearsay or otherwise. i thought scotland close to n/w england but endless research shows nothing so far. local press or anything. please….?

  I have only recently become aware of your web site, and have enjoyed it very much. My wife and I visited Scotland in 2005, and were impressed by it’s stark open landscapes, animal agriculture, and rich history.

  I have recently begun some general inquire into our family history. It appears that our first traceable ansestor is George McDwell who immagrated to the colonies in the mid 1700’s. Probably as a result of the purge of the Higlanders after Bonnie Prince Charlies defeat in 1745.

  I believe that our McDowell/MacDougal roots are with the older branch from the Galloway region. However, the Argyllshire branch is the most traceable. How would I begin to confirm which branch our heritage is derived from?

  I’m applying to grad school in Scotland next fall (Sept 2008) to study Scottish History. I found your site a few weeks ago and have thoroughly enjoyed reading your articles. Thanks! Also, if you have any information regarding clan relationships (who was feuding with who, why, etc), I think that type of content would be very interesting to include.

  Robert
  As per which line you are from you have to do the research from you current ancestors to a common ancestor of a speicific branch. If you gotten your research back as far as Scotland? That should be your first step.

  Cheyene
  Not sure about the Millers but a number of sites state that Miller was a common name in Orkney, Caithness, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, North Lanarkshire, so it could be in the highlands and the lowlands of central Scotland. If you are looking for Little surname many are found in the Borders region especially in the middle marshes.

  I am both a historian who has done a lot of Scottish history research and genealogist who has done extensive research in the Dumfries and Galloway region for 17 years. This is a great blog for Scottish history. For the person going to grad school in Scotland, good luck. I am currently a online student at the U of Dundee doing post graduate work in Family and Local History and good I know you will enjoy your studies.

  I was just reading your website, one of the many that talks about Robert de Bruce. Well, as you can see my last name is “Bruce” my grandfather told me that the name came from Scotland. And I was just woundering if you could please help me understand more of Robert de Bruce. -thanks!
